INFOGRAPHICS #48: Characteristics of the frigate candidates for the Hellenic Navy's new frigate program and the interim solutions

By Lysimachos Samasitis

Photo: Nick Thodos
This post is about the characteristics of the frigate candidates for the Hellenic Navy's new frigate program and the interim solutions by country. The Navy’s frigate program amounts to 5 billion, and includes the construction of four new frigates, the upgrade of the existing four Hydra-class (MEKO-200HN) frigates and the provision of interim solution ships (at least two major surface combatants: new light frigates or second-hand frigates). The following tables are the result of an exceptional and difficult effort to capture the basic characteristics of the candidate frigates, both for main program (Table 1) and interim solution (Table 2) for the Greek naval program by Lysimachos Samasitis! The tables will be updated regularly based on the latest developments and updates from the manufacturers in order to be a valuable source for those who wish to compare the different proposals. Εnjoy!

  1. So from Thrust system point of view, Sigma-FREMM-G&C are the best, especially for ships worried for ASuW, remember that Quitter means better own sonar performance. Pity no-one touches the subject.

    1. Very true! A quieter ship is essential for ASuW. The Arrowhead 140 and the Belharra both use CODAD (combined diesel and diesel) they are pretty much useless for an effectie ASuW. For todays extremely quiete submarine you need an electric drive system.

The only ones offering this system are the Dutch (Sigma 11515 also for the light frigates ), the Spanish with the F110 and the Italians with the FREMM. All the others like the French, British, Germans and the Americans do not offer this. The Americans do not even offer a sonar. These frigates are pretty much useless when it comes to ASuW.

  2. A lot has changed on this chart as far as what is offered. There is an assumption that the best will be on each ship and that is not so. While the F110 seems better offered to the Greeks than to the Spanish Navy, the British are holding back. It's how their price is low. And the French are the most expensive with a ship that has less and less with each offering. No STRALES, NO ECM, and no SCALP. Also they are offering only one missile per their 36 cells. The Mk41 on the F110 and Dutch chips can take 4 ESSM per cell that have longer range than Mica.
The SPanish have the best deal so far. By Far

  3. Sorry, a question! Which Missile system has better kill percentage, the ESSM
or the Aster 30? Asking cause i read somewhere that the Aster is shoot and forget so if it has better kill percentage then 32 missiles could be the same affective in result as the 64 sea sparrows. I don`t think we will have 128missiles in one ship and i`m intrigued with the possibility of Scalps on board that the Belh@arra could take. I think the Dutch offer though might be the more balanced one.

  4. Aster 30 is a long range missile. The equivalent is the American SM-2 missile. The equivalent of the Aster 15 is the ESSM Block 2 missile. Both missiles have a longer range than their French equivalents. The ESSM Block 2 also has a fire and forget mode.

Instead of relying on semi-active radar guidance, where one of the ship's radar illuminators has to "paint" the target for the missile to guide toward and eventually detonate nearby, ESSM Block II features both active and semi-active radar seekers. This dual-mode seeker setup combined with a datalink allows the missile to be fired at targets without ever having the ship illuminate the target at all. The missile gets mid-course updates from the ship via a datalink for longer distance engagements, or it can be launched "fire and forget" for shorter engagements. Fire and forget mode can be used for longer-range shots too, with the missile flying out to its best guess of where the target will be on its own inertial guidance system before turning on its active radar seeker, but the chances of a successful intercept will decrease the farther the missile flies without the benefit of mid-course updates.
